The Fairway Loops 1.5 km and 2.5 km - Easy

The trails around the fairways of the golf course are mostly flat skiing, winding along the scenic wooded course. There is a short downhill on the 2.5 km loop at the beginning of the fourth fairway. A shorter flat route is the 1.5 km loop which heads down the first fairway and along the second before turning right into the woods. It emerges onto the fairways and back to the clubhouse.

Loops in the Forest 4.5 km, 5.5 km, Cabin - Moderate

Starting out on the fairways and heading into the woods at the end of the fourth hole leads onto the trails towards the Lost Haven cabin. The trails are trackset for classic skiing, and where they are wide enough, for skate skiing as well. You can cut off to the right at the first junction to ski a 4.5 km loop or head further for a 5.5 km loop. The trails provide pleasant skiing through open spruce and pine forests, and all of the junctions are marked with signs. The loop to the Lost Haven Cabin is 6.5 km. This cozy building was constructed in 1996 as a cooperative project between Forest Renewal BC, the Wolverine Nordic and Mountain Society (WNMS), and the District of Tumbler Ridge. It has a cast iron stove, picnic tables and an outdoor fire pit, and is used as a warming hut. There is no water available at the cabin, so please watch your fire. Overnight use of the cabin requires being a WNMS member and requesting permission from the WNMS. The cabin sits on the edge of the escarpment above the Murray River with views that include Mt Bergeron, with prominent cliffs on its south face (see the Bergeron Cliffs Hiking Trail brochure). The entire area of the trails is a terrace, which is a remnant of sand and gravel deposited by a glacial lake that occupied the valley at the end of the last ice age. The river has cut through this terrace, leaving unstable banks which periodically slump into the river and block its channel.

Escher’s Loop is a 2 km loop trail beyond the cabin that is a worthwhile extra. A spur at the far end of the loop ends in a Booker Bench with a good view of the river valley as well. This trail is sometimes groomed, but there is usually a skier-set track.

Larry’s and Linda’s trail is too steep for enjoyable skiing.

Directions to the Trailhead

The main access to the trails is from the golf course. Follow Monkman Way, which turns into Golf Course Road, leading to the clubhouse and parking. From the parking lot, head down the hill onto the first fairway.
